Winter Weed Control in South East QLD: Stop Weeds Before Spring

Tidy garden. Healthy lawn. Less hassle come spring.
Winter is actually one of the best times to get ahead of weeds here in South East Queensland – Caloundra Produce & Landscape Supplies is here to help you win the battle.

Why Weeds Love Winter in SE QLD

Our mild winters mean some weeds never go fully dormant. Even when growth slows, many are still active underground—spreading roots and setting the stage for a full takeover when the weather warms up.

Winter is your window to strike early, before they surge.

The Most Common Winter Weeds in SE QLD

Here’s what you’re likely to see popping up now:

Bindii (Soliva sessilis):

Those nasty spiky devils show up in winter and hurt bare feet in spring. Bindii is a low growing weed with carrot-top like leaves, it produces a single flower at its centre, that when matures produces a prickly seed pod. The bindii prickles become easily stuck in feet – A backyard cricketers nightmare

Solution To kill Bindis – Getting onto them early is key One of favorite staff solutions we recommend is: Bow & Arrow Herbicide

The standard for broadleaf weed kill in the Australian turf industry. For the control of various broadleaf weeds. Safe for use on many turf varieties including Buffalo and Blue Couch. 500mL of Bow & Arrow can treat up to 1000sqm.

Bow & Arrow Herbicide provides outstanding control of broadleaf weeds in turf. Broadleaf weeds including White Clover, Plantain, Capeweed, Cat’s ear, Bindii, Cudweed, Creeping oxalis.

Clover:

Also known as White Clover, this weed has leaves with three leaflets, and creeping stems that set roots at whatever point they touch the ground. Flowers are white or pink. Clover, with white flowers, is a member of the pea family. This means clovers can fix nitrogen from the air and therefore they favor poorly fertilised lawns.

Solution To kill Clover – Bow & Arrow Mentioned above does a great job across all Turf varieties.

We also recommend Searles Bindii & Clover Killer Weeds controlled – Bindii, Clover, Dock, Dandelion, Chickweed, Fleabane, Creeping Oxalis, Lambs Tongue, Cudweed.‍ Suitable for use on lawns & turf such as Couch, Blue Couch, Fescue, carpet Centipede, Kentucky Blue and Ryegrass.

Winter Grass (Poa annua):

Small, light green grass with seed heads—it spreads like wildfire. Culms (stems) of the ‘Poa annua’ plant can be up to 30cm if left unmown. The soft, narrowly linear, flat, smooth leaves are up to 3.5 mm wide. Foliage is often lime green in colour for the annual types and darker green in colour for the perennial. Commonly ‘Poa annua’ can produce multiple to several inflorescence (panicles), which can grow up to 7 cm if left unmown.

Solution To kill Wintergrass: Our staff recommend David Grays Winter Grass Killer The product works by stunting the growth of the plant, particularly the germinating seed which will start coming up in Autumn (generally speaking). Having stunted/stopped the plant´s growth, it can not spread/reproduce. Sustained treatment is required to control winter grass, and this product should not be used on Kikuyu lawns, but is OK for Buffalo and Couch lawns, but always consult the label before using the product.

Ideally applied around Mid-Autumn or as the climate gets colder and the days get shorter, and will be effective during the entire Autumn-Winter-Spring cycle.

Nutgrass Cyperus Rotundus:

Nutgrass is a persistent member of the sedge family and has managed to infiltrate nearly all cultivated gardens. It emerges and grows rapidly during the warm growing seasons and seems to have no boundaries for soil, pH or climate. It is a weed and bane of a gardeners life on a global scale.

Solution To Kill Nutgrass: Surefire Tempra 750WG Herbicide Nutgrass Killer Tempra should be used. Tempra inhibits acetolactate synthase, a key enzyme in the plant’s metabolic pathway. This inhibition stops plant growth and plant death occurs 14 to 21 days after initial application.

Creeping Oxalis Oxalis Corniculata:

Creeping oxalis is a small weed which grows from stolons and is typically found in lawns. It doesn’t have underground bulbils, though the stolon system is still an efficient form of vegetative reproduction for this species. It allows creeping oxalis to spread out through turf to form quite dense mats at times. It is helped by its tolerance of many of the commonly used selective turf herbicides. It has little yellow flowers which help make the plant obvious at those times of the year when it is flowering.

Solution To Kill Creeping Oxalis: One of favorite staff solutions we recommend is: Bow & Arrow Herbicide

Mulching: Your Secret Weapon Against Winter Weeds

Winter might slow weed growth, but it doesn’t stop it—especially here on the Sunshine Coast. That’s where mulching comes in. It’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent weeds from taking hold while also giving your garden a boost.

Here’s how mulch helps:

  • Blocks Sunlight: Weeds need light to germinate. A thick layer of mulch (at least 7cm) blocks sunlight, smothering weed seeds before they get a chance to sprout.
  • Reduces Soil Disturbance: When soil is bare, weed seeds get stirred up and germinate easily. Mulch creates a protective barrier that keeps things undisturbed.
  • Retains Moisture & Regulates Temperature: Mulch helps your soil hold onto warmth and water during cold, dry winter days—giving your plants the edge over any sneaky weeds trying to move in.

Best Mulches for Weed Control

  • Cypress Mulch – Naturally weed-resistant and long-lasting. Great for ornamental beds.
  • Sugarcane Mulch – Breaks down faster, ideal for veggie patches and fruit trees.
  • Tea Tree Mulch – Adds organic matter while deterring weed growth and pests.
