Recycled Railway Sleepers: A Sustainable and Rustic Choice for Your Landscaping Project

Looking to bring authentic, weathered charm to your next landscaping project? Recycled hardwood railway sleepers offer unbeatable durability, a rich sense of history, and an eco-friendly alternative to modern materials. Whether you’re creating a garden border, a retaining wall, or a rustic outdoor feature, railway sleepers are the real deal.

At Caloundra Produce & Landscape Supplies, we’re proud to be the Sunshine Coast’s largest supplier of genuine reclaimed railway sleepers, offering a wide range of grades and sizes to suit any landscaping job.

What Are Railway Sleepers Made From?

Railway sleepers used on Australian railway lines are made from dense, high-quality hardwoods designed to withstand the test of time — and tracks. Common timber types include:

  • Redgum
  • Jarrah
  • Ironbark

The exact timber can vary depending on the state they came from and what timber was available at the time of manufacture. These timbers are incredibly strong and make fantastic landscaping materials with a timeless, rustic feel.

Where Do They Come From?

Our reclaimed railway sleepers are sourced from railway upgrades and replacements across Queensland and wider Australia. These old tracks have seen decades of service — and now, they’re ready for a second life in your garden, retaining wall, or outdoor project.

Railway Sleeper Grades: What’s the Difference?

Our sleepers are sorted by grade to help you find the right timber for your specific job. The main grades available are A, B, and C Grade, with AA occasionally available.

🔹 AA Grade

  • The highest quality sleeper
  • Minimal wear, square corners, excellent structural integrity
  • Ideal for feature pieces or structural work

🔹 A Grade

  • High-quality reclaimed sleeper
  • Solid and straight with 2–3 good sides
  • May include bolt holes and minor surface wear
  • Great for retaining walls, garden steps, or visible landscaping elements

🔹 B Grade

  • Structurally sound sleeper with some wear and minor rot on one side
  • Generally has 1–2 good sides and is great for retaining walls, veggie beds, or garden edging

🔹 C Grade

  • More rustic, with heavier wear and more visible rot or cracking
  • Still full length, with at least one good side
  • Perfect for driveway borders, rustic features, or low-budget landscaping

If you’re unsure what grade is right for your project, our team is happy to help guide you based on use, budget, and aesthetic preferences.

What Sizes Are Available?

Most railway sleepers are:

  • 2.1m long
  • 225mm wide
  • 125mm thick

How Much Do They Weigh?

Expect each sleeper to weigh between 50–65kg, depending on grade and moisture content. They’re heavy-duty for a reason — and built to last.

Can You Cut Railway Sleepers?
