Mulching in Hot, Dry Weather — Protect Your Garden the Smart Way

By Caloundra Produce & Landscape Supplies

When the Sunshine Coast heat kicks in and rainfall drops, your garden feels it first. Dry soil, thirsty plants, and water restrictions can make maintaining a lush garden a real challenge. But there’s one simple, effective way to beat the heat mulching.

Mulching is more than just a tidy finishing touch. It’s a protective barrier that helps your garden survive and thrive through our dry, hot months.

Why Mulching Matters — Especially in Dry Weather

A good mulch layer offers benefits that go far beyond looks:

  • Moisture Retention: Mulch helps lock in precious soil moisture by reducing evaporation by up to 70%.
  • Temperature Control: Keeps soil cooler on scorching days and warmer on cool nights protecting delicate root systems.
  • Weed Suppression: A thick layer of mulch blocks light, reducing weed germination and growth.
  • Soil Health: As organic mulch breaks down, it improves soil structure and adds valuable nutrients.
  • Erosion Control: Prevents soil from washing away during sudden summer downpours.
